COVID-19 cases - Weekly review: 29 August - 4 September 2022

During the week of 29 August to 4 September, the number of people testing positive for COVID-19 remained almost stable with 715 cases compared to 777 cases the previous week.

In addition, 298 people were re-infected, representing 29% of all those who tested positive, compared to 287 (27%) the previous week.

The number of PCR tests performed during the week of 29 August to 4 September has decreased from 4,937 to 4,904.

7 people reported a positive rapid antigen test (RAT) for the reporting week, compared to 9 the previous week, bringing the number of positive results performed by a health-care worker to a total of 3,451. It should be noted that positive RATs are not included in the calculation of the positivity rate.

On 4 September, the number of active infections had decreased to 1,821 (compared to 1,889 on 28 August), while the number of people healed increased from 283,681 to 284,464. The average age of those diagnosed as positive for COVID-19 is 43.7 years.

For the week of 29 August to 4 September, no new deaths related to COVID-19 have been reported.

In the hospitals, there were 4 new admissions of confirmed COVID-19 patients in normal care, compared to 8 the previous week. In intensive care, the number of occupied beds is 1. The average age of hospitalised patients is 54 years.

Positivity rate and incidence rate

For the reference period, the effective reproduction rate (R) decreased, with 0.87% compared to 1.02% the previous week, while the positivity rate on all tests performed (prescriptions, contact tracing) decreased from 15.74% to 14.58%.

The 7-day incidence rate decreased to 111 per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 120 per 100,000 inhabitants the previous week.

Re-infections as well as certified self-tests were included in the calculation of incidence rates.

Compared to the previous week, the incidence rate has decreased in the 0-9 age group (-14%), in the 25-49 age group (-10%) and in the 60-74 age group (-34%). An increase is recorded in the remaining age groups.

The most significant increase is recorded in the age group 85+ years (+63%), followed by the age group 75-79 years (+38%). The lowest incidence rate is recorded in the 0-19 age group (between 78 and 95 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), while the highest incidence rate is recorded in the 35-59 age group with between 226 and 240 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Contaminations

All 1,020 resident cases from the week of 29 August to 4 September 2022 were reviewed and the source determined. Travel abroad is the most frequent source (36%), followed by family activities (19%), and leisure activities (8%). The percentage of undetermined sources has decreased (25%).

Vaccinations: update on the situation

For the week of 29 August to 4 September, a total of 1,390 doses were administered. 14 people received a 1st dose, 21 a 2nd dose, 117 people received one complementary dose to a full vaccination, 1,217 received a second complementary dose to a full vaccination and 21 received a third complementary dose to a full vaccination, bringing the total number of vaccines administered as of 5 September to 1,290,223.

474,549 people have a complete vaccination pattern, which corresponds to a vaccination rate of 79% of the eligible population (i.e. the 5+ population).

"Impf-Bus on tour"

The next stops of the "Impf-Bus on tour" will be announced on covidvaccination.lu.

Please note that the vaccination can be done without appointment (identity card and CNS card required). The type of vaccination offered is the initial vaccination and the booster dose.

Vaccinations in the "Impfbus" are done without prior appointment, which means that you have to wait for your turn, which can cause waiting times, especially during busy periods. In order to avoid long waiting times and for greater convenience, it is advisable to make an appointment at the vaccination centre, with a doctor or at a pharmacy.

Reopening of the Victor Hugo vaccination centre on 13 September 2022

In order to prepare the population as effectively as possible for possible waves of infection during the coming autumn and winter, the Luxembourg Government is reopening the Victor Hugo vaccination centre in Luxembourg City as of Tuesday 13 September. Opening hours are Tuesday to Friday from 7am to 7pm and Saturday from 7am to 1pm.

Please note that the centre will be exceptionally closed on Saturday 17 September due to the arrival of the Tour de Luxembourg.

In addition to the vaccination centre, it is possible to get vaccinated at medical offices or pharmacies participating in the vaccination campaign, as well as in the "Impfbus". The list of all vaccination possibilities can be consulted on the following website: covidvaccination.lu
