Heatwave alert: Level 3 high heat alert activated as a preventive measure and monitoring visits and hydration assistance launched for people aged 75 and over
In view of current weather forecasts, the Health Directorate has activated Level 3 of the Heatwave Alert Plan. The duration of this alert will be adapted according to developments in the situation, which will be continuously monitored by the competent authorities.
According to the latest forecasts, overnight temperatures are expected to remain high from Friday night into Saturday, with temperatures not falling below 20°C. From Monday onwards, the perceived temperature could locally reach up to 39°C, with humidity further increasing the sensation of heat.
Support measures for vulnerable people
As part of the heatwave response plan, a specific support scheme is available for eligible people aged 75 and over, including monitoring visits and assistance with hydration during periods of extreme heat. These visits will begin shortly.
Eligible persons (aged 75 and over, living alone, having limited autonomy, and not receiving support through long-term care insurance) who are not yet enrolled in the scheme are invited to register, or to be registered by a relative or carer, by contacting the Luxembourg Red Cross by phone, on 2755, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays), from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Outside normal working hours, healthcare professionals and the Grand-Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) may contact the Health Inspectorate's duty service to arrange registration for persons concerned.
The COPAS coordinates with home care and assistance networks responsible for providing support to beneficiaries. Individuals registered through the Red Cross are requested to answer the door when healthcare staff visit their home or to notify the assigned care network if they will be absent. For any additional questions or practical information, the Health Inspectorate of the Health Directorate can be contacted on 247-85653, Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Anyone experiencing discomfort, unusual fatigue, dizziness, headaches, confusion or fever is advised to seek medical advice promptly. In case of an emergency, always call 112!
Reminder of precautionary measures
The Health Directorate reminds the public of the essential precautions to take during periods of extreme heat:
- Drink water regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty.
- Avoid strenuous physical activity during the hottest hours of the day.
- Stay in cool places or in the shade whenever possible.
- If going outdoors, take appropriate precautions against the heat: wear light clothing, cover your head, stay in shaded areas and carry water with you.
- At home, keep windows, shutters, blinds and curtains closed during the day to preserve cool indoor temperatures and ventilate only during cooler periods.
- Check regularly on elderly, isolated or vulnerable people.
- Never leave a person, especially a child, or an animal alone in a vehicle.
This activation also takes place in the context of National Day celebrations and the festivities scheduled over the coming days and throughout next week. Particular vigilance is required during gatherings and outdoor events so that everyone can enjoy the celebrations in the safest possible conditions. The Health Directorate wishes everyone a happy National Day, marked by conviviality, prudence and safety.
