Biography

Luc Frieden was born on 16 September 1963 in Esch-sur-Alzette.

Education and qualifications

After his primary and secondary school studies in Luxembourg, Luc Frieden obtained a master's degree in business law from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in France in 1986. The following year he continued his postgraduate studies at the University of Cambridge (Queens' College) in the United Kingdom, where he obtained a Master of Comparative Law (LLM). In 1988, he completed a Master of Laws (LLM) degree at Harvard Law School in the United States.

Governmental posts

Following the legislative elections of 8 October 2023, Luc Frieden was appointed Prime Minister by HRH the Grand Duke on 17 November 2023. He currently leads the coalition government between his party, the Christian Democrats (CSV/EPP), and the Liberals (DP/Renew Europe).

Other political posts

Luc Frieden was a member of the Luxembourg government from 1998 to 2013 in various governments under Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker. He served as Minister of Justice, Minister of Defence, Minister of the Treasury and Budget and Minister of Finance.

A member of the CSV party (EPP) since 1994, Luc Frieden was also a member of Parliament from 1994-1998 and head of the CSV list for the 2023 legislative elections.

Professional activities

From 1989 to 1998 and from 2016 to 2023, Luc Frieden was a member of the Luxembourg Bar.

In 2016, he was a visiting professor of business law at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland.

From 2016 to 2023, Luc Frieden was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Banque Internationale à Luxembourg (BIL) S.A. and a member of the Board of Directors of the Luxembourg Stock Exchange (Bourse de Luxembourg). In addition to his professional activities, Luc Frieden has also chaired the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce and the European Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Eurochambres.
