Biography
Marc Spautz was born in 1963 in Esch-sur-Alzette.
Education and qualifications
After completing his secondary education at the Lycée privé Emile Metz and the Lycée technique d'Esch-sur-Alzette, Marc Spautz undertook vocational training as an automotive mechanic.
Governmental posts
From April to December 2013, Marc Spautz served as Minister for Family Affairs and Integration, Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, and Minister for Relations with Parliament in the Juncker–Asselborn II Government. Following the resignation of Georges Mischo, Marc Spautz was appointed Minister of Labour and took office on 11 December 2025 in the coalition government formed by the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) and the Democratic Party (DP).
Other political posts
Marc Spautz joined the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) in 1981. He served as Secretary General of the party from 2009 to 2012 and as Party President from February 2014 to January 2019.
At the 2004 legislative elections, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the first time. He was re-elected in 2009, 2013, 2018 and 2023. From October 2011 to April 2013, and again from November 2023 until his appointment to government office, he served as Chairman of the CSV parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies.
At local level, Marc Spautz was active in his home municipality of Schifflange from 1994 onwards. With the exception of an interruption during his ministerial term from 2013 to 2017, he served continuously on the municipal council: as a councillor from 1994 to 1999, as an alderman from 2000 to 2005, as a councillor from 2005 to 2011, as an alderman from 2011 to April 2013, and again as an alderman from late 2017 to December 2025.
Alongside his political engagement, Marc Spautz was a member of the Chamber of Labour from 1984 to 1988 and of the Chamber of Private Sector Employees from 1993 to 2004.
Professional activities
From 1978 to 1984, Marc Spautz worked as an automotive mechanic. He was subsequently employed from 1984 to 1985 by WSA (Warehouses Service Agency) in Sanem, and from 1985 to 1989 by the then Cegedel company. From 1990 to 1996, he worked as a trade union secretary of the LCGB. From 1996 to 1998, he served as Deputy Secretary General, before holding the position of Secretary General of the LCGB from 1998 to 2009.
