Statement by Jean Asselborn on the execution of Navid Afkari in Iran

"I condemn in the strongest terms the execution of Navid Afkari in Iran on 12 September 2020. I would like to reiterate our commitment to freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful demonstration, as well as the right of everyone to a fair trial. Like its partners in the European Union, Luxembourg is opposed to the death penalty everywhere and under all circumstances, without exception. The death penalty is a cruel, unjust and inhuman punishment that offers no form of deterrence and makes miscarriages of justice irremediable. Luxembourg calls on all States still applying the death penalty to establish a moratorium with a view to its definitive abolition. Our objective remains its universal abolition."
