COVID-19 cases - Weekly review: 13 - 19 June 2022

The number of people testing positive for COVID-19 has increased from 2,824 to 3,985 cases (+41%) for the week of 13 to 19 June 2022.

The number of PCR tests performed during the week of 13 to 19 June has increased from 9,289 to 11,336.

52 people reported a positive rapid antigen test (RAT) for the reporting week, compared to 35 the previous week, bringing the number of positive results performed by a health-care worker to a total of 3,111. It should be noted that positive RATs are not included in the calculation of the positivity rate.

As of 19 June, the number of active infections has increased to 7,039 compared to 4,991 on 12 June, while the number of people healed increased from 246,619 to 248,554. The average age of those diagnosed as positive for COVID-19 is 38.9 years.

For the week of 13 to 19 June, 2 new deaths related to COVID-19 have been reported. The average age of the deceased is 81 years.

In the hospitals, there were 15 new admissions of confirmed COVID-19 patients in normal care, compared to 6 the previous week. In intensive care, the number of occupied beds has increased to 2. The average age of hospitalised patients is 51 years.

Positivity rate and incidence rate

For the reference period, the effective reproduction rate (R) decreased, with 1.19% compared to 1.24% the previous week, while the positivity rate on all tests performed (prescriptions, contact tracing) increased from 30.40% to 35.15%.

The 7-day incidence rate increased to 617 per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 438 per 100,000 inhabitants the previous week.

Re-infections as well as certified self-tests were included in the calculation of incidence rates. The incidence rate increased in all age groups.

The largest increase was recorded in the 75+ age group (+82%), followed by the 0-14 age group (+73%). The lowest incidence rate is recorded in the 75+ age group (454 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), while the highest incidence rate is recorded in the 30-44 age group with 958 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Contaminations

With the number of cases increasing, it is difficult to call, review and determine the likely source of infection for all cases over the past week at the time of writing this report. Among the 5,204 resident cases registered in the week of 13 to 19 June 2022, only 855 cases (16%) called on 13.06. and 19.06. were examined and the source was determined.

The family circle remains the most frequent source of transmission of COVID-19 infections (33%), followed by education (11%), travel abroad (9%), work (7%) and leisure activities (6%). The percentage of undetermined sources has decreased (28%).

Wastewater monitoring in Luxembourg as part of SARS-CoV-2

According to the latest CORONASTEP report drawn up by the LIST (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology), the contamination level of the 13 wastewater treatment plants analysed during the 24th week of 2022 still shows a high prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater at national level. Both nationally and regionally, the trend is very similar to that of the previous week, with SARS-CoV-2 flows stabilising at a high level.
