The mandate of the EUSR for the Middle East Peace Process is to contribute actively to a final settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on a two-state solution. As a neighbouring country, Jordan plays a key mediation role and is an essential partner in the Middle East Peace Process.

On this occasion, Minister Bettel thanked his Jordanian counterpart for Jordan's tireless efforts to promote stability and peace in the region, as well as for the solidarity it has shown over the years by hosting hundreds of thousands of refugees.

As for the situation in Gaza, Minister Bettel stressed that an immediate ceasefire must be the absolute priority, in order to put an end to the suffering of the civilian population and allow the release of the Israeli hostages.

The Minister also underlined the need for the international community to maintain regular communication in order to reach a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

‘Indeed, only a genuine political solution based on the two-state solution - i.e. with Israel and Palestine as two independent states, side by side - is likely to create a just and lasting peace in the region. I am convinced of this: peace for Palestine will be peace for Israel, and vice versa’, declared the head of Luxembourg's diplomacy in this context.

With the dual objective of improving the situation of the people on the ground and finding a lasting political solution to the conflict, Minister Bettel will continue his discussions with international and regional partners.
