Xavier Bettel on official visit to Canada
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, undertook an official visit to Canada from the 10 to 12 June 2025.
This visit marked the inauguration of the Embassy of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in Canada. In his address during the raising of the Luxembourg flag in front of Ottawa City Hall — attended by Mayor Mark Sutcliffe — and at the inauguration reception, the Deputy Prime Minister spoke about the bilateral relations between Luxembourg and Canada. He emphasised that the official opening of the Embassy coincided with the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and recalled the long-standing and privileged relations between the two countries.
Looking beyond historical ties, Minister Bettel also addressed the current diplomatic relations, which are based on shared values and a mutual commitment within international organisations. In addition, the Luxembourg Foreign Minister highlighted the excellence of the economic relationship between the two countries: Luxembourg ranks as the seventh-largest foreign direct investor (FDI) in Canada, while Canada holds the fifth place among non-EU countries in terms of FDI in Luxembourg.
Summarising the diplomatic relations, Xavier Bettel emphasised: 'Canada and Luxembourg might have different sizes and different histories, but ultimately, we realise that we can go further and faster together.'
While in Ottawa, Xavier Bettel also had political meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, and the Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu. In addition to discussing bilateral cooperation, these two meetings provided an opportunity to address current political issues, including global trade, preparations for the conference on the two-state solution, Russia's aggression against Ukraine and the NATO summit.
Regarding the current state of global trade, the consequences of tariffs for the EU and Canada were at the center of discussions. Xavier Bettel and his counterpart, Maninder Sidhu, emphasised the importance of the European and Canadian markets to one another. Full ratification of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) by all EU member states could further boost trade between Canada and European economies. Xavier Bettel also raised the possibility of organizing a future economic mission to Canada with Luxembourg companies.
In addition to political meetings, Minister Bettel also met with representatives of the Canadian business sector and participated in a meeting with the heads of delegation of EU member states in Canada.
