Joint statement by the Ministry of State and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs on the situation in the Middle East
The Luxembourg Government is following the hostilities between the United States, Israel and Iran, and developments across the Middle East region, with great concern. The Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister met this afternoon to take stock of the situation and to discuss the potential implications for Luxembourg nationals as well as for regional stability. Luxembourg will continue to coordinate with its partners at European level and within the Middle East region.
Through its consular assistance service, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs is assisting Luxembourg nationals in the region and remains in contact with the airline Luxair. The Ministry calls on all nationals to follow the instructions of the local authorities, to keep themselves informed of developments and to register their stay on the LamA platform (guichet.lu/lama). At present, the Ministry formally advises against all travel to the crisis-affected region, in particular to the Gulf countries, as airspace closures and disruptions are likely to persist for some time.
The Government reiterates its full solidarity with the Iranian people, who have been brutally oppressed for decades by the regime in place in Tehran, and supports the Iranian people in their right to self-determination and in their mobilisation to defend their freedom and fundamental rights. Luxembourg has supported numerous international initiatives and resolutions to this end, as well as all restrictive measures adopted by the European Union, including the recent listing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation by the European Union.
The Government also expresses its solidarity with the countries of the region facing Iranian attacks in retaliation for Israeli and United States strikes and calls on Iran to cease these strikes immediately.
The Government calls on all parties to exercise restraint, to work towards de-escalation, to protect civilian populations and to act in full compliance with international law.
Iran must put an end to all activities that threaten international peace and security, in particular its nuclear programme. Luxembourg supports all diplomatic efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
