State visit to Luxembourg by the President of the Republic of Cabo Verde, José Maria Neves, and his wife, Débora Katisa Carvalho - Second day

At the invitation of TRH the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess, the President of the Republic of Cabo Verde, José Maria Neves, and his wife, Débora Katisa Carvalho, will paid a state visit to Luxembourg from 23 to 25 May. The presidential couple was accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Regional Integration, Rui Alberto de Figueire do Soares, the Minister for Communities, Jorge Pedro Maurício dos Santos, and the Minister for Industry, Trade and Energy, Alexandre Dias Monteiro.

The Presidential couple and HRH the Grand Duke visited the town of Esch-Belval for a tour of the urban complex in the south of the country. They were welcomed by Claude Meisch, Minister for Higher Education and Research, Franz Fayot, Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Action, Minister of the Economy, Georges Mischo, Mayor of Esch-sur-Alzette, and Simone Asselborn-Bintz, Mayor of Sanem.

After a welcome address by Jens Kreisel, Dean of the University of Luxembourg, Minister Claude Meisch and the President of the Republic of Cabo Verde held speeches at the University's House of Knowledge. A meeting with Caboverdian and Luxembourg students and researchers was also on the agenda.

The delegations were then briefed by Minister Franz Fayot and Luxinnovation CEO Sasha Baillie on the strategies and various activities of Luxinnovation, the national agency for the country's economic development.

Daniela Di Santo, Director of the Belval Fund, then presented the history of Belval, its industrial history, the steel production of the past, but also the new Belval with its players and users of its infrastructures. The presidential couple and HRH the Grand Duke visited the Learning Centre, located in the former ore loading building, the Möllerei. The Learning Centre is a space which, in addition to traditional library services, offers a modern learning environment.

Prime Minister Xavier Bettel will then had the honour of welcoming, on behalf of the government, the Caboverdian President, José Maria Neves, and his wife, Débora Katisa Carvalho, to a lunch in the Cast-Iron Pocket Hall. Discussions were focused on bilateral relations at the political, economic and cultural levels, as well as the major issues of current European and international politics.

In the early afternoon, the Caboverdian President, accompanied by HRH the Grand Duke, visited the Luxembourg Stock Exchange for a presentation of the sustainable finance activities and cooperation projects with the Caboverdian stock exchange by the President Alain Kinsch, the Commercial Director Carlo Houblie and the Head of Sustainable Finance of the Luxembourg Green Exchange, Laetitia Hamon.

The two Heads of State were then welcomed at the Chamber of Commerce by Minister Franz Fayot, Minister for Energy Claude Turmes, the President of the Chamber of Commerce Fernand Ernster and the Director General of the Chamber of Commerce Carlo Thelen. After the speeches by Ministers Franz Fayot and Claude Turmes, President José Maria Neves and HRH the Grand Duke took part in a round table discussion with representatives of the House of Training, the House of Cybersecurity and the House of Start-ups.

For her part, Débora Katisa Carvalho was received at the Fraenhaus of Femmes en détresse (Women in Need) for a presentation of the institution and a personal exchange with the residents. The First Lady of Cabo Verde will also held several meetings with non-governmental organisations.

A concert by the Caboverdian pianist Khali, followed by a reception hosted by the President of the Republic of Cabo Verde and his wife in honour of TRH the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess at the Cercle Cité, in the presence of HRH the Hereditary Grand Duke, concluded this second day of the State Visit.
