Working visit between Luc Frieden and German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz

On 8 January 2024, Prime Minister Luc Frieden made a first working visit to the Federal Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz.

The visit started with a face-to-face meeting with the Federal Chancellor, followed by a working session to discuss European and international issues.

The Prime Minister's visit to his counterpart in Berlin underlined the excellent bilateral relations between Luxembourg and Germany. He reiterated the new government's unequivocal commitment to continuing its close cooperation with Germany, particularly on cross-border and bilateral issues, but also on European issues.

The heads of government discussed potential avenues for bilateral collaboration in the economic sphere. Closer cooperation in the field of renewable energies was also raised.

The working meeting also provided an opportunity to address topical European and international issues, in particular the Russian aggression against Ukraine. While stressing the importance of solidarity with Ukraine, it was agreed that fair burden-sharing at both EU and NATO level is essential for both governments.

The meeting provided an opportunity for both countries to coordinate their efforts ahead of the European Council meeting on 1 February 2024, when discussions in Brussels will focus on the revision of the multi-annual financial framework.
