Orange alert: flood warning from Wednesday to Thursday
The Storm and Flood Risk Assessment Unit (CERI) met on Wednesday morning, 24 September, to assess the current weather situation. Following this meeting, the Water Management Agency (AGE) has issued an orange alert for flood risk, covering the entire country, with particular attention to the central and northern regions, from 10:00 AM until midnight.
During this period, continuous rainfall is expected, with accumulations estimated between 20 and 40 l/m². The intensity of the precipitation is expected to decrease during the second half of the night.
Due to heavy rainfall during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, water levels in the south of the country have already risen significantly. On the Alzette, water levels at the measuring stations in Hesperange, Pfaffenthal and Steinsel are expected to exceed the orange alert threshold before noon, with peak levels anticipated in the afternoon. At the stations in Mersch and Ettelbruck, exceeding this threshold cannot be ruled out.
The flood forecasting service of AGE is closely monitoring the situation.
The authorities are calling on citizens to be vigilant. Heavy rain could cause difficult traffic conditions. It is recommended to be aware of the diversions and road closures that have been put in place and to check regularly the weather forecast on the website www.meteolux.lu.
Authorities urge caution, especially during seasonal activities near rivers (such as camping, construction sites, etc.). Heavy rainfall can lead to sudden flooding and significantly impact traffic conditions. It is strongly recommended to follow any detours and road closures in place, and to regularly check weather and flood forecasts on www.meteolux.lu and www.inondations.lu.
The CERI will meet again in the afternoon.
