Children's Week 2026: Learning, a child's play!

Children's Week returns for its fifth edition from 30 May to 5 June 2026 This year, the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth is dedicating the event to the theme: "Experiencing non-formal education: learning, a child's play!"

Non-formal education includes crèches, mini-crèches, after-school care centres (maisons relais), school foyers, day-care centres and childminders. These education and care services support children aged 0 to 12 outside school hours.

Non-formal education plays a fundamental role in children's development and wellbeing. Guided by clearly defined educational objectives, education and care services provide an environment in which children can explore the world in a playful and age-appropriate way. They develop social skills as well as key competences for the future – including cooperation, communication, creativity, autonomy and participation – which enrich and complement formal schooling and lay the essential foundations for children's future educational journey. Children's Week will open on 30 and 31 May with the Children's Festival at the Neumünster Abbey Cultural Exchange Centre.

Children's Festival: daytime events on 30 and 31 May

The Festival will take place on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 May 2026 at the Neumünster Abbey Cultural Exchange Centre. Over the course of the weekend, children aged 0 to 12 and their families will be able to take part free of charge in more than 60 workshops and activities across the event's 24 exhibition stands.

Among this year's new features are mini-conferences for parents in French, Luxembourgish and English, accompanied by fun activities for children. A rally, vox pops and a quiz will complete the programme.

An information stand hosted by the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth will welcome visitors and answer questions relating to educational approaches, childcare services and the childcare-service voucher scheme (chèque-service accueil). Visitors will also have the opportunity to discuss parenting-related topics with representatives from the Eltereforum service.

Food trucks catering for all appetites will also be available on site.

In 2025, the Children's Festival welcomed more than 13,500 visitors over the two-day event.

Children's Week: nearly 1,100 activities across 234 education and care services

Following the Festival, Children's Week will take place throughout the country from 30 May to 5 June 2026. A total of 234 education and care services will open their doors to the public and offer more than 1,000 different activities.
