State visit to Luxembourg by the President of the Republic of Cabo Verde, José Maria Neves, and his wife Débora Katisa Carvalho - First day

At the invitation of TRH the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess, the President of the Republic of Cabo Verde, José Maria Neves, and his wife, Débora Katisa Carvalho, paid a state visit to Luxembourg from 23 to 25 May. The presidential couple was accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Regional Integration, Rui Alberto de Figueire do Soares, the Minister for Communities, Jorge Pedro Maurício dos Santos, and the Minister for Industry, Trade and Energy, Alexandre Dias Monteiro.

On the eve of the state visit, the Caboverdian presidential couple was welcomed at Luxembourg airport by Minister Marc Hansen, representing the Luxembourg government.

The President of the Republic of Cabo Verde, José Maria Neves, and Débora Katisa Carvalho were officially received by HRH the Grand Duke on the forecourt of the Grand Ducal Palace. After the military honours, the playing of the national anthems, the review of the troops and the presentation of the respective authorities and delegations, the presidential couple had a meeting with the Luxembourg Head of State in the Palace.

The programme then included the laying of a wreath at the national monument of Luxembourg Solidarity (Kanounenhiwwel) in the presence of the Prime Minister, Minister of State, Xavier Bettel, and the Chief of Staff of the Army, General Steve Thull. On leaving the monument, José Maria Neves and his wife greeted flag bearers, members of the Second World War Remembrance Committee and representatives of patriotic movements and associations.

The presidential couple and HRH the Grand Duke then had the opportunity to continue their exchanges during a private lunch at the Grand Ducal Palace. Jean Asselborn, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, also hosted a lunch in honour of the Caboverdian ministers, which was attended by Corinne Cahen, Minister for the Family Affairs and Integration, Minister for the Greater Region.

In the early afternoon, the Caboverdian Head of State received the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Fernand Etgen, the Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, and the Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, in audience at the Grand Ducal Palace. On this occasion, Xavier Bettel was awarded the First Degree of the Order of Amílcar Cabral, the highest honour of the Republic of Cabo Verde.

The Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, Lydie Polfer, welcomed the Presidential couple and HRH the Grand Duke to the City Hall for an academic session in the presence of the College of Aldermen and the City Council. Musical entertainment was provided by a group of musicians and the Fortissimo Choir of the Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg.

The cultural programme included a guided tour of the Lëtzebuerg City Museum followed by a walk along the Corniche.

The first day of the state visit ended with a gala dinner hosted by the TRH Grand Duke and Grand Duchess in honour of the President of the Republic of Cabo Verde and his wife at the Grand Ducal Palace, in the presence of HRH the Hereditary Grand Duke.
